Net Zero Teesside construction ramps up: quay upgrade complete, local firm wins piping contract
Construction activity on the UK's flagship carbon capture projects at Teesworks continues to build, with two significant milestones this spring and summer.
The multi-million-pound upgrade of Redcar Bulk Terminal's deep-water quay, critical enabling infrastructure for the construction of NZT Power and the Northern Endurance Partnership, has been completed, and the first major equipment for NZT Power has arrived through the port.
Meanwhile, Teesside-based Cavendish Northern Limited has won a piping pre-fabrication contract on the East Coast Cluster projects, a sign that the supply chain benefits are landing with local firms as promised.
What is being built
NZT Power is designed to be the world's first commercial-scale gas-fired power station with integrated carbon capture, delivering up to 742 MW of dispatchable power. Together with the Northern Endurance Partnership's offshore storage infrastructure, it forms the East Coast Cluster. Tees Business has reported the projects delivering £1.5bn to the UK supply chain.
Balfour Beatty, construction partner on NZT Power and NEP, has launched a local recruitment campaign in Teesside, and local MPs toured the site in May to see progress at first hand.
The knock-on for local trades
Mega-projects at Teesworks do not just employ industrial specialists. They pull labour, plant hire, scaffolding, welfare facilities and temporary electrics from across the regional market, and the wages they pay feed straight into household spending on improvements and maintenance across the TS postcodes.
